Position Summary

The primary responsibility of your job position is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty. Such supervision must be accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the facility and may be required by the Director of Nursing (DON) and or/Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) when applicable, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative Functions

  • Assist with planning, directing, and coordinating nursing services.
  • Maintain policies, manuals, and records per regulations.
  • Report issues, incidents, and changes in resident conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with procedures and documentation standards.

Personnel Supervision

  • Assign work schedules and delegate duties to LPNs and CNAs.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Monitor staff attendance and dress code adherence.
  • Promote teamwork and a positive working environment.

Nursing Care

  • Oversee admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Perform daily rounds and evaluate resident status.
  • Administer medications and treatments per physician orders.
  • Monitor IVs, vital signs, and lab specimen collection.
  • Ensure proper documentation and care planning.

Care Planning

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and revise resident care plans.
  • Ensure care plans reflect current needs and are followed by staff.

Quality Assurance

  • Participate in surveys, audits, and QA programs.
  • Identify and address care quality issues.

Committees

  • Attend Infection Control, QA, and other assigned committees.
  • Implement committee recommendations.

Education & Staff Development

  • Conduct in-service training and help develop annual training programs.
  • Stay current with nursing best practices and maintain active licensure.

Safety and Infection Control

  • Promote safe work practices and use of PPE.
  • Monitor for compliance with infection control procedures.
  • Participate in emergency drills and report hazards.

Equipment & Supplies

  • Ensure equipment is maintained and used safely.
  • Monitor stock levels and reduce waste.

Budget & Fraud Prevention

  • Report suspected fraud or abuse.
  • Recommend cost-effective nursing service adjustments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of nursing regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient with medical recordkeeping systems (PCC preferred).
  • Must be patient, tactful, and emotionally resilient.

Physical Demands

  • Able to lift/push/pull at least 25 lbs.
  • Must move intermittently throughout the day.
  • Must be able to function under stress, with ill or agitated residents.
  • Able to assist during emergencies.

Education & Experience

  • Nursing degree from an accredited program.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in long-term care.
  • Training in rehabilitative/restorative nursing.
  • Active, unencumbered RN license in the state.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Must meet all CE/licensing requirements.
