Automated Optical Inspector - Charlotte, NC

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) systems to inspect PCB assemblies for solder joints, component placement, and other assembly defects.
  • Review and validate machine-reported defects, performing manual microscopy or magnification-based inspection to confirm or reject flagged errors.
  • Repair or touch-up flagged solder related defects
  • Work from CAD files, IPC-610/IPC-A-610, and IPC-J-STD-001 standards to define inspection parameters and ensure in-process and final inspection compliance.
  • Act as the final quality gate, documenting and reporting findings to Engineering and Production leads.
  • Collaborate with process engineering and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot recurring defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain AOI equipment cleanliness, including optics, conveyors, and lighting assemblies.
  • Adhere to all safety, ESD control procedures, and ISO 9001:2015 requirements in the inspection area.
  • Keep work area, tools, and documentation organized and up to date.
  • Support cross-functional initiatives aimed at achieving zero-defect production.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with IPC-610, IPC-A-620, and J-STD-001 quality standards.
  • AOI Systems: Experience programming and troubleshooting key AOI platforms (e.g., CyberOptics, Koh Young, Nordson Dage).
  • Inspection Skills: Strong visual acuity with microscopes and magnification tools; ability to interpret complex X-Y component patterns.
  • Computer Proficiency: Comfortable with inspection software, basic scripting or recipe management, and data-logging tools.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to defect analysis and documentation; committed to zero-defect goals.
  • Physical Requirements: Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and color perception; able to stand for extended periods.
  • ESD Awareness: Knowledge of electrostatic discharge controls and cleanroom best practices.
  • Understanding of solder paste inspection (SPI) and X-ray inspection workflows. (Preferred)
  • Six Sigma or Lean training in process control and defect reduction. (Preferred)
  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to work occasional overtime. (Preferred)

 Education & Experience

  • Experience: 1–3 years of hands-on experience operating AOI equipment in a PCB assembly environment.
  • Prior experience with multiple AOI systems and model changeovers. (Preferred)
  • Certifications in IPC-A-610 or IPC-J-STD-001. (Preferred)
