Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner will participate in the care of inpatient and outpatient clients in support of the VAGLAHS's West Los Angeles and Sepulveda facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up patient care.
  • Executes position responsibilities independently and collaboratively in accordance with the scope and Standards of Nursing Practice within the specialty area.
  • Pacemaker, Implanted Cardioverter-Defibrillator, and Cardiac Implanted Electronic Device evaluation and management.
  • Management of patients with heart failure
  • Monitoring Exercise Tolerance Tests
  • Care decisions and management of new and foll-up patients presenting with cardiac diagnosis.
  • Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff.
  • Effectively identifies, evaluates, and addresses disease prevention and health promotion issues while administering quality patient care.
  • Demonstrate advanced assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Maintains legible, accurate, and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations.
  • Documents care/visit in CPRS appropriately, accurately, and concisely. Utilizes POE.
  • Follows clinical guidelines and standards of practice as provided by VAGLAHS for health promotion, maintenance, and illness prevention.
  • Completes health histories and other clinical documentation consistently and with pertinent information.
  • Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term healthcare issues.
  • Care and treatment plans are consistent with assessments. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests appropriately.
  • Selects/furnishes (prescribes) or recommends pharmacological agents and durable medical equipment appropriately.
  • Sets priorities to provide care in an organized and timely manner.
  • Presents cases in a concise, organized manner. Participates in professional development.
  • Evaluates own performance according to the Advance Practice Nurse (APN) Scope of Practice standards of professional and regulatory bodies and takes actions to improve practice.
  • Maintains mandatory requirements and competency standards.
  • Treats staff, patients and family with respect and dignity.
  • Uses clinical research techniques in decision-making and in making recommendations. Identifies and documents appropriate International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding for patient encounters.
  • Educates patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.
  • Complies with performance measures identified by VA Central Office
  • Complies with safety, patient guidelines, and other regulatory requirements as directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate advanced assessment and decision-making skills
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without any reasonable accomodations.
  • Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required.
  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail oriented, organized, and demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to perform duties in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations.
  • Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10ft
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Must be willing to work Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm at the west Los Angeles location and Sepulveda location.

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of approved nursing program through an accredited nursing school approved by the State at the time the program was completed.
  • Must possess current nursing license in at least one (1) state, territory, or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia
  • Minimum 1-year direct patient care experience in cardiology within the last three years. Prior experience working with the VA is highly desired.
  • Must possess current Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNPC-AG) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) certification
  • Must possess current BLS and ACLS issued through the American Heart Association
